Planting the Future: Two New Street Trees for Dresden

In Dresden-Pieschen, two new street trees were planted together with Minister President Michael Kretschmer and Mayor Dirk Hilbert. These two trees symbolize more: more green space, a better quality of life, and a climate-resilient Dresden.

The two sweetgums (Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Worpleston’) at the corner of Döbelner Straße and Bolivarstraße mark the start of the “Street Trees” project by the BUGA Dresden 2033 e. V. support association. Under the motto “We Plant the Future,” additional tree-planting initiatives are planned for the Dresden metropolitan area in the future.

A visible step toward BUGA 2033

With the BUGA, we aim to initiate precisely these kinds of changes: enhancing green spaces and open areas, strengthening the connection between the city and nature, and making Dresden a more livable and climate-resilient city in the long term. Especially in light of rising temperatures, more green spaces in the city are becoming increasingly important. Street trees provide shade, improve the microclimate, and enhance the quality of life—particularly in heavily paved areas. Together with initiatives such as the “sponge city” concept and green inner-city corridors, they are a key building block for the city of tomorrow.

Together, ideas become change

The “Street Trees” project, which is being implemented by the BUGA Dresden 2033 e. V. Support Association in collaboration with the Saxony Association for Garden, Landscape, and Sports Field Construction (VGL Sachsen), demonstrates how concrete change can result from a joint initiative. The project is not intended to stop at these two trees: It aims to spur further plantings while also raising awareness of the importance of trees as part of a sustainable green infrastructure.

GLF Garten- und Landschaftsbau Dresden GmbH will be responsible for the maintenance and care of the newly planted trees—which come from Leutersdorfer Baumschulen Pflanzenhandels GmbH—for three years.

The Free State of Saxony is also an important partner for Dresden on the road to BUGA 2033. “Every BUGA begins with the first tree,” said Minister President Michael Kretschmer during the planting ceremony. What begins today with two trees is set to grow and make an impact in many places throughout our city by 2033.
